Spring Blossom 2015: artist talk Willie Doherty
Willie Doherty (b.1959, Derry, UK), lives in Derry
Doherty’s early photo works combine topographical images overlaid with words and phrases, demonstrating his interest in the ambiguous meanings that images can suggest. His engagement with the political conflicts in Northern Ireland and his home town of Derry inspired many of his video and film works. In recent years, Doherty had solo shows in Museum De Pont (Tilburg, 2014), City Factory (Derry, 2013), Statens Museum (Copenhagen, 2012), Huge Lane Gallery (Dublin, 2011), ICA (Toronto, 2009), Fruitmarket (Edinburgh, 2009) and Dallas Museum of Art (2009). Doherty was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1994 and 2003. He has represented Ireland at the Venice Biennial in 1993, Great Britain at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 2003 and Northern Ireland at the Venice Biennial in 2007. He participated in dOCUMENTA (13). The artist is represented by Kerlin Gallery (Dublin), Alexander and Bonin (New York), Peter Kilchmann (Zürich), Matt’s Gallery (London) and Galeria Moises Perez de Albeniz (Madrid).
