Matthew Monahan (b. 1972, Eureka, California) is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles.

He was a participant at De Ateliers in 1994-96 and periodically visits as a guest tutor. His talk will focus on the lasting influence that De Ateliers has had on his practice by tracing divergent bodies of work back to specific discoveries made in the Stadhouderskade studio. This genealogy will not only shed light on his methods and objects but will highlight the special intensities of the institution and the potential trajectories latent in the seemingly minor works of a young artist.  His work has been exhibited in  galleries and institutions internationally over the past twenty five years, notably starting with the solo exhibition ‘Zeno’s Quiver’ at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1997. He has participated in outdoor public sculpture presentations in Paris, Amsterdam, London, and New York. His monumental bronze sculpture Hephaestus, which debuted at the 2013 Venice Biennale, is on permanent display in the Walker Art Center’s Sculpture Garden, Minneapolis, MN. Examples of Monahan’s work are included in the public collections of the Azkonobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam; the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas; the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; De Ateliers, Amsterdam; Fries Museum; Leeuwarden; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; SFMoMA, San Francisco; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; TATE Modern, London; The Rabo Art Collection, Netherlands; The Saatchi Collection, London; and the Utrecht Museum, Utrecht among others.
